Asbestos Garage Roof Transformation in London - March 2025 - Excel Roofing & Asbestos Ltd Skip to main content

Sometimes the most straightforward jobs are the most satisfying to complete. We recently helped a homeowner in London with the removal of an old asbestos cement roof on their single garage – a standard, detached structure located at the edge of their driveway.

There were no access issues and no pressing time constraints. Just a classic case of aged asbestos reaching the end of its life, and a customer who wanted it gone safely and professionally.

The Problem

The garage had been built in the mid-20th century, with a shallow-pitched roof made from corrugated asbestos cement sheets. Over the years, the edges had started to crumble, and moss had taken hold in some areas. Although there were no leaks yet, the client didn’t want to take chances, especially as they were planning to repaint and tidy up the exterior.

The brief was simple: remove the asbestos safely, leave the timber structure intact, and prepare it for a future roof installation.

The Work

Our team arrived early in the day and began by securing the area and laying polythene sheeting inside the garage to catch any dust or debris. The client had already cleared the interior, which allowed us to get straight to work.

After donning full PPE, we dampened the roof to reduce fibre release and used hand tools to carefully remove the sheets. Each panel was lifted intact where possible, then and transported for disposal in accordance with HSE regulations.

With the sheets removed, we gave the frame a full clean using H-class vacuums, then conducted a visual inspection of the structure to confirm no residue or fragments remained.

A Clean Slate

As requested, no new roof was installed on the day – the customer planned to handle that themselves at a later date. We left the timber frame intact, clean, and ready for re-roofing.

The job was completed in half a day with minimal disruption, and the client received all necessary paperwork, including waste transfer notes and removal documentation.
