About Hull
Hull, officially known as Kingston upon Hull, is a port city in East Yorkshire, England, with a rich maritime history. Founded in the late 12th century by the monks of Meaux Abbey to promote the wool trade, the town was originally called Wyke on Hull. It was later granted a royal charter in 1299 by King Edward I and renamed Kingston upon Hull. The port’s strategic location on the confluence of the River Hull and the Humber Estuary allowed it to grow as a major trading hub, particularly with northern Europe.
Throughout the medieval period, Hull thrived as a center for the export of wool and the import of wine and was fortified with walls to protect its valuable trade. By the 16th century, Hull had become one of England’s most prominent ports. Its maritime importance continued into the 20th century, highlighted during World War II when Hull suffered significant damage due to its industrial and port facilities.
In the post-war era, Hull diversified its economy, moving into sectors such as healthcare, education, and chemical manufacturing, although the port still plays a crucial role. Hull was designated as the UK City of Culture in 2017, which spurred a wide range of cultural and regeneration projects that highlighted its unique heritage and contemporary arts scene.
Today, Hull covers an area of approximately 71 square kilometers (27 square miles). With a population of around 260,000, it remains a vital port city, known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and significant contributions to the UK’s maritime industry.
