Asbestos Garage Roof Transformation in Derby - February 2025 - Excel Roofing & Asbestos Ltd Skip to main content

One of our recent projects took place just outside the city centre in Derby, where we were asked to carry out the removal and replacement of a single garage roof. The structure itself was free-standing with good access all around, making for a smooth, well-paced job – ideal conditions for a clean and efficient result.

What Was the Issue?

The garage was still in regular use, mainly for storage, but the original asbestos cement roof had become visibly aged. Cracking along the surface, signs of moisture ingress, and patches of moss growth were all indicators that the roof had well and truly served its time.

While the structure underneath was still sound, the roof was clearly due for attention. The homeowner contacted us to carry out the necessary work with a full focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and durability.

Removal Process

Once on site, we carried out a pre-work inspection and prepared the area for safe asbestos removal. Polythene sheeting was used to protect the internal space, and warning signs were posted in accordance with HSE guidance. Our team worked in full PPE, using dampening methods to reduce the risk of airborne fibres.

The removal was completed with hand tools, and a fine-tooth comb approach was taken to ensure no residual debris remained on the timber frame or wall plates.

After a final check of the surrounding area, the site was cleared and ready for the new roof to be installed.

The Replacement Roof

The client opted for a no-fuss, galvanised steel garage roof replacement – a popular choice that offers excellent protection from the elements without the need for ongoing maintenance. The new roof was measured to size and cut on site for a perfect fit, then fixed in place using corrosion-resistant fastenings.

A ridge flashing was added to cap the top of the pitched roof and provide a weather-sealed join. The result was a solid and functional roof with a clean, modern finish.

Final Notes

While there were no complications during the project, we still carried out a thorough clean-up and provided the client with waste transfer notes and photographic records for peace of mind.
